After Osteopathy or Sports Massage: Soreness, Exercises and Red Flags

Just had osteopathy or a sports massage? Your body often keeps adjusting for a day or two after treatment. Here is how to help it.

In the video, Sam, one of our practitioners, talks you through it. Everything she covers is written out below so you can come back to it.

Your aftercare, step by step

First 24 to 48 hours

Mild soreness, stiffness or tiredness is common and usually settles within 48 hours. Keep moving gently: a short walk is better than sitting still. Drink plenty of water. Avoid heavy lifting, intense training and long periods in one position today. A warm bath can help muscle soreness; for a new injury, a cold pack for 10 minutes helps more.

Your exercises

If you were given stretches or exercises, start them as advised. Little and often works better than one long session. Stop any exercise that causes sharp pain.

Next appointment

Follow-up timing depends on your plan. Booking your next session before things tighten up again gives the best result.

What's normal

This is general aftercare information. Always follow any specific advice your clinician gave you on the day. If you were treated at another clinic, contact them first, as products and techniques vary.

Results vary from person to person. Every treatment starts with a consultation with a registered clinician.
