Subcision for Acne Scars: Aftercare and Healing Timeline

Just had subcision for acne scarring? Subcision releases the bands that pull scars down, and the bruising afterwards is part of the process. Here is how to look after your skin.

In the video, Umesh, Medical Director at 65 Medical, talks you through it. Everything he covers is written out below so you can come back to it.

Your aftercare, step by step

First 48 hours

Swelling and bruising are expected and can look worse on day 2. Use a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time. Keep the area clean and avoid make-up for 24 hours. Avoid alcohol, exercise, saunas and sunbeds. Avoid ibuprofen and aspirin unless a doctor has told you to take them; paracetamol is fine.

Days 3 to 10

Bruising fades over 7 to 10 days. Use a gentle cleanser, bland moisturiser and SPF 30 or higher daily. No retinol, acids or facials for a week. If we asked you to massage the area, do so gently as shown.

Weeks 2 to 8

As the skin heals, new collagen fills under the released scars. Improvement builds over several weeks, and most people need more than one session.
