What Actually Happens on an IV Drip? Paul Walks You Through It in Brentwood

"What actually happens on an IV drip?" It is one of the questions Paul, our Clinical Director, is asked most often. In this article he walks you through the appointment step by step, so you know exactly what to expect before you book.

Paul appears in real video filmed at our clinic; his voice in this video is AI-generated and lip-synced, made with his consent. The clinic footage is real and filmed with consent.

First, a proper health consultation

IV drips are not right for everyone. Before anything else we go through your medical history, any medications you take and any conditions that might make a drip unsuitable. If it is not right for you, we will say so.

The appointment, step by step

  1. Consultation. Medical history and a chat about why you are interested.
  2. Settling in. You sit back in a comfortable reclining chair.
  3. The cannula. A small cannula is placed in a vein, usually in the arm or hand. Most people feel a brief sharp scratch.
  4. The drip. The fluids go in slowly while you relax. Plenty of people read, scroll or catch up on emails.
  5. Monitoring. We keep an eye on you the whole time and check how you are feeling.
  6. Finishing. The cannula is removed, a small dressing is applied and you are free to go.

How will I feel afterwards?

How people feel after a drip varies from person to person, and we do not make promises about specific effects. Some people notice very little; others simply enjoy the time out. If you feel unwell at any point during or after your drip, tell us straight away.

Who it may suit

IV drips may be considered by adults who have had a health consultation and been found suitable. They are not suitable for everyone, including people with certain heart or kidney conditions, and during pregnancy unless advised by a doctor.

Common questions

Does it hurt?

The cannula is a quick scratch. After that, most people feel nothing more than a cool sensation in the arm.

How long does it take?

Allow time for your consultation as well as the drip itself. We will give you a timeframe when you book.

Can I drive afterwards?

Most people can carry on with their day, but we will advise you on the day based on how you feel.
